A woman on a mission… more importantly, a woman on God’s mission” is how to describe Dr. Debbie Lassiter. As a writer, vocalist and minister, Dr. Lassiter exudes a zeal for helping the downtrodden that is unparalleled.
For over 35 years, Dr. Lassiter has reached out to people of all walks of life. As a young girl, she was inspired by a “Dear Abby” letter that spoke of the need to ‘reach out to people who are lonely”. So, she reached out to her first lonely person, a prison inmate. Thus the seed for prison ministry was planted.
Dr. Lassiter found music and singing as a powerful means to reach out to people. Realizing that God was her real inspiration, she lifted her voice in praise which spread as far as London, England to earn her the New Christian Music Artist of the Year award in 2006 and 2008. As both gospel and contemporary Christian songwriter, she is very versatile in delivering her message. Dr. Lassiter has founded and led several local and national praise and worship teams and has self-published three musical CD’s.
Today, Dr. Debbie Lassiter is the Executive Director and co-founder of the Convergence Resource Center (CRC). The CRC provides ancillary support services for individuals rebuilding their lives after trauma. The trauma is defined by the individual and may include divorce, loss of employment, incarceration, human trafficking, sexual assault, sexual abuse, incest, domestic violence or addiction. The CRC was birthed in 2004 responding to an outcry from women at the Robert E Ellsworth Correctional Center. Dr. Lassiter is certified in Trauma Informed Care and is a certified FASD Educator. She has over 35 years of experience working with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men and women. Dr. Lassiter is a licensed Associate Minister at the New Testament Church of Milwaukee and holds a Doctorate in Divinity from St Thomas Christian College in Jacksonville, Florida. She is the author of “Right Here in the Middle”, an autobiography of her Christian ministry and surviving a storm when you are right in the middle.
Dr Lassiter facilitates an 8 week support group for women triumphing over sexual assault and sexual abuse. She wrote the curriculum and has received powerful responses from women whose lives have been changed as a result of participating in this group.
Lassiter’s efforts and work in the community were honored by the United States Department of Justice – Eastern District of The United States Attorney’s Office. She was awarded with the National Victim’s Rights Award in April 2014. News of her tremendous sacrifice continued to spread and in June 2014 she was named as one of the 50 Heroes of Fortune 500. Under her leadership the Convergence Resource Center has received several awards and been featured in the media online, over the airwaves (radio and TV) and in print.
Dr. Lassiter firmly believes that all things are possible, “If we only believe!” Whether she is ministering through music, teaching or praying, one quickly recognizes her genuine love and faith in Christ. Her favorite scripture drives home the source of her strength. “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.” Jeremiah 32:17
